Our Practices
Ranch Life
We feel honored to be stewards of the land and animals. At the P4610 Ranch, we raise happy animals, produce healthy, delicious food, and are immersed in our local community. We are truly a farm to table operation. We are proud to share this with you.
We have several separate areas of paddocks, pastures, and fields. This helps to manage different ages and species of animals as well as allow the land much needed rest to regenerate. Cattle have access to both fresh well water and natural water tanks/ponds. The natural cycle of cattle on the land provides a source of their native food; their manure provides necessary nutrients for the soil. We have multiple barns where we have raised baby pigs and orphan calves (bottle babies) and special needs animals. The barns can be adjusted in the extreme winter or summer with heaters, misters, and fans to accommodate our needs for keeping our animals safe and temperatures controlled. Some finishing steer are housed in individual pens where they can be near but separate from other animals eliminating competition for resources.
Daily life includes feeding/watering animals, cleaning, and maintenance of machinery and fences. Regular preventive care includes animal deworming, vaccines, hoof maintenance, mineral and other supplementation, and targeted pest control for human as well as animal health and safety. Several times a year we gear up for hay production. Our livestock receive treatment only as medically necessary. We keep exceptionally detailed records on all our animals.
Our foundation herd consists mainly of Hereford, Angus, and Beefmaster cattle. We believe in branding with pain control for our animals for safety as well as identification. Our brand is registered and recorded with the Marks and Brands authority in Madison County, Texas. Curious young steer can get themselves into trouble or lost, severe weather can blow down trees and fences. Identification allows them to get safely back to their home ranch without panic. We choose not to use any growth implants or hormones. Our herd has been chosen based on traits important to us. Calm, gentle temperament, heat tolerance, marbling, calving ease and maternal instinct, and healthy delicious meat production. We feel that the end weight of the animal is a small piece of the puzzle and implants and hormones to achieve those goals do not fit with our purpose.
